trauma release exercise

Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) are a series of exercises that activate a natural reflex mechanism in the body — a neurogenic tremor — which helps to release deep-seated tension stored in the muscles and nervous system.

The tremor induced by the exercises is a physiological response that the body is already familiar with: it is the response the body seeks to produce after intense stress, and one that we usually inhibit as a social reflex.

how does it work

The programme comprises seven exercises that gradually fatigue certain muscle groups — particularly the psoas and hip muscles — until an involuntary tremor is triggered. This tremor then naturally spreads throughout the body.

The autonomic nervous system, which had been in a state of alert, can thus recalibrate itself. What words alone cannot always achieve, the body can accomplish through this channel.

Note: TRE® can complement psychotherapy or medical treatment in the management of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but is also suitable for anyone wishing to release chronic tension, even without an identified trauma.

what it brings

Regular practice of these exercises can lead to:

  • Regulation of the nervous system
  • Reduction in chronic stress
  • Better sleep
  • Relief from muscle pain
  • Increased emotional resilience
  • A greater sense of self-reliance
  • Energy and vitality
  • Body awareness

what happens during a session

We begin with a discussion to assess your medical history and ensure that TRE® is suitable for your current situation.

Then, if appropriate, I will guide you through the seven exercises. The tremor occurs naturally — without you causing or controlling it. You learn to observe it, let it pass through your body, and regulate it yourself. The ultimate goal is for you to be able to practise independently.
